Where in heaven's name are all the rhymes for seven?
Win absolutely nothing for making some up!
It's the bane of children's writers everywhere (especially those
writing counting stories): The paucity of rhymes for seven.
Eleven and heaven get the most use, but beyond that, unless you
can work in leaven, Kevin, or Devon, you're sunk.
In the face of this rhyme shortage, what's a rhyming writer to do?
You can shift "seven" to somewhere earlier in your sentence, thus
avoiding the end-rhyme issue; or you can fudge the line with a
sorta-rhyme (while tempting, this option isn't really a good idea); or
you can throw away your pencil and take up macrame.
Well, I'm no good at macrame. And English is a living language,
right? So what's stopping us from making up some new words?
Ones that just so happen to rhyme with seven?
So. This calls for a contest!
Send me your made-up, kid-friendly word that just so happens to
rhyme with seven, along with a definition. Give some thought to
your definition, as it's no good having a rhyme for seven if it doesn't
happen to be the sort of word you can work into a plausible storyline.
Any part of speech is acceptable.
I'll list all of the entries that I receive on a "Rhymes for Seven"
page (with your name noted or not noted, as you prefer). There is
absolutely no prize involved, and neither fame nor fortune is
guaranteed or implied, but at some point I will hold a vote on the
entries. The rhymes-with-seven entry deemed best will be featured
right up top on the list in big bold letters in the color of your
choice. How's that for a payoff!
Email me your submission. If you would, please include "seven" somewhere in the subject line. Can't wait to read it!
